Painting | Water-Based Paints | Mixed Media

Painting is a wonderful way to convey creative expression & the forms used to do so are numerous. Drawing, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction, among other aesthetic modes, may serve to establish the expressive & conceptual intention of the artist. Paintings can be naturalistic or representational as in a still life or landscape painting, photographic, abstract, narrative, symbolistic, emotive or even political in nature. Whatever your chosen style, painting is immensely rewarding. And of course there are many different types of painting materials such as magical watercolour, versatile acrylics & sumptuous oils to explore.

About: Joanne trained as a classical painter at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Her work has been exhibited many times & resides in private, British & International collections. Over the last decade there has been a powerful shift & new authenticity in her creativity & voice resulting in works with a heart-centred & spiritual element. Her teaching methods are a unique combination of her extensive experience. See Jo’s website.

Workshop Details: The class is relaxing, fluid & organic & structured around individual student needs & levels. The intimate working environment allows for the gentle & open exploration into art making & criticism & is to be treated as integral to the development of studio work.
Space is simple therefore students are encouraged to use the space in a slightly monastic way. In other words, there is not enough room to create 6ft oil paintings however there is an infinite amount of space for self-discovery. Students wishing to fully develop their studio work in a professional & serious manner are invited to have their progress monitored & targets set. In order to direct your studies can also book mentoring sessions.

The master class is a full & holistic approach to real life as a ‘creative’ & therefore is much more than just an art class & could include the following if you are interested: –

  • Art and business
  • Critiques & finding your voice

Dates: Tuesday, tbc for 2021
Time: 2pm – 5pm
Suitable For: improvers, intermediate & advanced
Cost: £90 for 3 sessions or £165.00 for 6 sessions
Tutor: Kate Rosie B.A.(Hons) Fine Art
TO BOOK: Click here to buy online or download the booking form

About: After completing her Diploma in Art & Design & achieving a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art in 2006 at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey, Kate works on her own artwork at her studio in Emsworth as well as tutoring at Unlimited Creative. Landscape, Interiors & Still Life are subjects that continue to excite her, as well as finding new ways of working. See Kate’s website.

Course Details: this new course with Kate is designed to push your semi abstract paintings even further into abstract, including collage. We will be working on acrylic cartridge paper A3 size.  At the studio we have the advantage of a landscape worthy of working plein air. Time spent outside will be short, with a very limited palette of colours, as we do as many quick painterly sketches in the time we have. Once back in the studio we will spend time looking & selecting from our work that will be the foundation of a more considered piece, as we tear & glue. It’s important to not be too precious about the torn work as it will gradually develop into new work.

It will be beneficial to complete at least three weekly sessions in order to gather enough sketches for your finished work. It’s also important to consider the placement of your collage so therefore it can’t be too rushed. However, there are no limits as to how much is added to the work, but the surprise of not knowing until you begin.
You will need to bring A3 size acrylic cartridge paper, including PVA glue & soft charcoal, but not willow. Protective clothing & as much of your palette  of acrylic paints, & brushes, along with any other materials you wish to use. For work outside, if you have a portable seat please bring that along, otherwise  you can buy suitable plastic sheeting at The Range in Chichester or wherever available local to you.
There will not be any traditional teaching of technique as it is important for you to develop your own explorations & interpretations. However, guidance will be given.
